Hockey Mom sentenced to 3.5 years for $500k embezzlement

PHOENIX — The former treasurer of the Arizona High School Hockey Association has been sentenced to 3½ years in prison and seven years of probation stemming from the embezzlement of at least $500,000.

Mary Ann Williams pleaded guilty to two counts of forgery and two counts of theft following her August 2010 arrest.

The 48-year-old began volunteering for the Phoenix-based hockey organization in 2003. An investigation into Williams began in early 2010 when the association contacted police about concerns she was stealing money.

Police say Williams apparently began embezzling money from the organization in 2005 and continued until she was removed from the treasurer's post in 2010.

Williams also was accused of issuing checks to herself, making electronic payments from the association's bank account and using its debit card for personal purchases.
